Preeti and Unicode: what is the difference?

Preeti is a font

Preeti is an old font that draws Nepali letters on the keys of an English keyboard. The file holds English letters like g]kfn, and only the Preeti font makes them look Nepali. Without it, the same text shows as nonsense.

Unicode is the standard

Unicode stores the real Nepali letters (नेपाल). It works on every phone, website and app, can be searched and sorted, and needs no font to be installed — which is why Facebook, Google and Gmail use it.

Why convert

Text typed in Preeti pasted into a website, a form or a chat shows as g]kfn. Converting it to Unicode makes it readable everywhere and lets Google find it.
